1. World’s Largest Running Event to Take Place August 31
Race and place almost always go hand in hand. In
every event from the most casual 5K to the Ironman Triathlon, competitors
gather at a single location and race as a group on the same course. But evolving technologies may be changing
that. For perhaps the first time on such a large scale, a race is occurring that
is not tied to a particular place. Nike is hosting the aptly titled “Human Race
10K” on the 31st of this month, and wherever you are in the world,
you can participate (so long as you have the iPod nano, Nike+ running shoes,
and the Nike+ system). Over a million people have already signed up to “run
for their country or continent,” making
it the largest running event in history.
2. Family on Bikes
A couple weeks ago we talked about the Jensses,
who are making their way around the world with mom, dad, and sons Tyler and
Stefan. But they aren’t the only family
out there with a captivating travel story. The Vogel family of
Boise,
Alaska to
3.Geography Tees:
Fashion Trend of the Future?
Now I may be one of the worst guys to consult on
anything having to do with fashion, but I think everyone will agree the
geography-themed t-shirts and apparel featured on the cafepress website are
pretty awesome. If you really think about it, you’re pretty much killing two
birds with one stone; looking like a stud (or studette) and promoting the importance of geographic knowledge. Check out the
variety of styles here.
4. BBC Satellite Tracking of Human Movement
I recently stumbled upon this preview for a
new BBC series that uses satellite imagery to document and explore the
intricacies of human movement throughout
Ever since I attended a community drum circle last week here
at a local Washington, D.C., park, I’ve felt the need to: 1) drum on anything and
everything I can get my hands on, and 2) spread the word on just how great a
tool it is for bringing diverse groups together in a place where raw human
expression is celebrated. The gathering provided a spectacle of rhythm and
dance, along with the freedom to abandon any sense of anxiety or embarrassment
for those participating. Check out this short article I found
that describes the benefits of community-driven music gatherings.

Thanks "SoulTraveler." You have an excellent, beautifully organized website that I certainly hope our readers will take the time to visit. And of course, we love that you're working with the organization "Reach the World,"--which the National Geographic Education Foundation (our "parent" organization") has supported and helped fund in the past--to bring your story to students and educators. Keep up the great work and enjoy your time in Sweden!

It is great to see you writing about the Jensses and Vogels! We are also a globe trotting family and we are starting our third year of our unique, open ended world tour!
We blog and vlog our experiences on our website and as a Youtube partner:
http://www.soultravelers3.com and http://www.youtube.com/user/soultravelers3
We have many schools kids and homeschool families that follow us and this year we will be taking disadvantaged kids with us virtually through the non profit organization, Reach the World!
It has been great fun to meet and collaborate with people from around the world. Right now we are in Sweden learning all about it's culture while staying with friends that we met on the internet!

Thank you so much for writing about our journey!! We have been having a blast so far - and expect that to continue as we move southward.
We are doubly excited right now - we just finished the Alaska Highway and (to the best of our knowledge) Davy and Daryl are the youngest people ever to cycle it!! It really is a huge achievement in and of itself!
